Bono Region formerly known as Brong-Ahafo was created on 14 April 1959 from the then Western Ashanti and named after the main ethnic groups, the Brong and Ahafo. In 2019, as a result of the 2018 Ghanaian new regions referendum, the region was divided into three, namely Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, and ceased to exist. Bono Region shares a border at the north with the Savannah Region, is bordered on the west by Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire international border, on the east by Bono East, and on the south by Ahafo Region. It has a population of about 1,208,649 according to Ghana statistical service in 2021 census, Sunyani as it capital.
TOURIST SITES
when it comes to tourist attractions the Region holds its own as one of the most beautiful tourist attractions sites in the country. The region is filled with wildlife and cultural attractions that are sure to keep you enticed for as long as your feeble mortal mind can hold it.
Here is another place where monkeys are held with utmost respect in Africa. The monkeys are never killed or harmed because they are said to have some traditional significance to the community. In fact, the community plants fruit trees just for these monkeys. They even go an extra mile in caring for their dead monkeys. They perform funeral rites for these dead monkeys before finally laying them to rest in the cemetery that was specifically built for the sole purpose of keeping dead monkeys. The monkeys you'll find here are the Mona monkeys and the black silky colobus.
The waterfall is one of the highest in Ghana, having three main drop points. The waterfall is found on the Pumpum River, one of the smaller rivers that flow from the Black Volta. The waterfall attracts its own healthy number of tourists annually and is still one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Ghana.
This grove is also a place to visit as its many beautiful rock formations all look fascinating. The grove is said to be sacred to the people of Tanoboase because the Tano River within the grove is believed to be the dwelling place of Taakora, the greatest of the gods of the Akan people.
This site is surrounded by hills on three different sides. The grove is home to many rock caves and different rock formations. Tourists can have fun exploring the caves, hiking the rocks and seeing far and wide from the high vantage point of the rocks. The site has a particular rock that looks like the shape of Africa and another that looks exactly like an umbrella.
Interesting history is tagged with this place as the caves are considered sacred by the people and it was strategically used in the war against the Ashanti.
Located on the Yoko River, at Yabraso which is 7km west of Kintampo town. The Fuller Falls gently flows from the east over a series of cascades forming rapids on the Yoko River (a tributary of the Black Volta) at Yabraso. The waterfalls provide a tourist with a wonderful, peaceful, and refreshing, plunge pool surrounded with seats made of concrete and rocks where one can relax quietly and have a delightful view of the falls.
The canopy walkway which is an added value to the Kintampo Waterfalls has been constructed over a valley spanning 90 meters and 80 meters at two locations on the waterfalls. It is found that a maximum load of twenty (20) human being each weighing an average of 100 kilogram (approx. 220 pounds) will produce a total maximum tensile force of 101.6 KN in the three supporting thread-way cables. This translates to 35.5KN in each cable used for canopy walkway. This is far below the allowable tensile force of the cable used for construction, which is 427KN.
Therefore, the Canopy Walkway is structurally fit to withstand loads and can accommodate up to twenty (20) human loads walking on the bridge at a time making the tourist package exhilarating.
